In a new survey measuring the well-being of residents in 135 countries, Malaysia was ranked at No. 37. The No.1 spot was taken by Panama while Costa Rica and Denmark came in at second and third respectively.

The survey, The Gallup-Healthways Global Well-Being Index, aims at measuring people’s perceptions of their well-being based on five elements:
• Purpose: Liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals
• Social: Having supportive relationships and love in your life
• Financial: Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
• Community: Liking where you live, feeling safe, and having pride in your community
• Physical: Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily

Based on the results, 24% of Malaysians are thriving in three or more elements. In terms of financial well-being, Malaysians are most likely thriving with only 17% of the population suffering. This is partly due to the country’s low unemployment rate.

Out of the five elements mentioned above, it does appear that Malaysians are more likely suffering (28%) in the first element, purpose. This basically means that many are not happy with their jobs or daily activities.

The table below (taken from The Gallup-Healthways Global Well-Being Index) shows a breakdown of Malaysia’s ranking with the percentage of people for each of the five elements.
