MRT CEO Resigns after Fatal Site Accident Involving 3 Workers

The CEO of Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid has announced his resignation, after an accident on Monday night at a MRT work site in Kota Damansara that claimed three lives.

In his statement, Datuk Wira said that his resignation was in line with MRT Corp’s culture of taking responsibility.

“As the head of MRT Corp, I am taking personal responsibility for the incident, and this is the correct thing to do.”

Datuk Azhar was appointed as CEO of MRT CORP on the 1st of September, 2011, after a decision by the Government to set up the company to take over the owner-ship and development of the Klang Valley MRT Project from Syarikat Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.

Three MRT construction workers, all Bangladesh nationals, were crushed when a 490 tonne concrete collapsed.

Construction work at the MRT worksite in Kota Damansara has been temporarily suspended to facilitate and investigation. Construction work at other MRT worksite continues as usual.

A full investigation into this issue will be carried out to determine those who are responsible.
