Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is in Amsterdam to discuss efforts to secure full and safe access to the MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine.

Najib met his counterpart Mark Rutte upon his arrival at Rutte’s office in The Hague.

According to a report on The Star Online, Malaysian Ambassador to the Netherlands Datuk Fauziah Mohd Taib confirmed that Najib will be briefed on the ongoing process of the disaster victim identification (DVI) at Hilversum. Najib will also meet with DVI leader Arie de Bruin and three Malaysian DVI members to figure out when the bodies of the Malaysian victims can be sent back home.

Both Najib and Rutte will also be discussing further cooperation between the two nations, as safe access to the crash site had still not been secured for the international investigation team.

Najib, who made a behind the scenes deal to secure three critical conditions with pro-Russian separatist, said that his priority right now was to ensure that his third condition was honoured (for the international investigators to have full and secure access to the crash site). The other two conditions were the handing over of the MH17 black boxes to Malaysia as well as the return of the victims’ remains to the Netherlands for identification and repatriation.

In other news, Malaysia is already preparing to receive the remains of its Malaysian victims by conducting a rehearsal. Hearses were spotted on standby outside the Bunga Raya Complex at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The remains of 43 Malaysians are expected to arrive in the next three weeks.

As of now, 227 coffins containing MH17 victims had been handed over to the authorities in the Netherlands, which is leading the international investigation team.
