A Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew members on-board has supposedly crashed in Ukraine, near the Russian border.

The Boeing 777-200 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Citing an aviation industry source, the report (by Reuters) says that the plane, MH17, came down 50km short of entering Russian airspace.

At press time (12.15am, 18 July), the only statement from Malaysia Airlines was a Tweet, saying that MAS had lost contact with MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukraine airspace.

A Ukrainian interior ministry official was quoted as saying by Interfax-Ukraine news agency that the plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine by militants. Apparently, the Boeing 777 came down near the city of Donetsk, stronghold of pro-Russian rebels, and was hit by a ground-to-air missile. We still aren’t sure if this is true.

More reports to follow in the morning.
