Founded in 2004, Lucky Air Airlines has since gone from a low-cost domestic carrier to an international service provider. Based in Kunming, Yunnan, the airline has five hubs in China, with the main hub being Kunming Changshui International Airport following the closing of Kunming Wujiaba International Airport.

As a founding member of the U-FLY Alliance, created to aid low-cost flight carriers expanding without the move of assimilation by larger providers across Asia, Lucky Air has proud ownership of a 55-strong fleet, and currently operates 106 routes (13 international and 91 domestic).

With a collaboration in Malaysia’s airspace, Lucky Air flies B737 and A320 aircrafts from Kuala Lumpur to Kunming and Lijiang three times a week, departing from KLIA’s Main Terminal. Lucky Air also has connecting flights from Kota Kinabalu and Penang. Each flight has a designated free baggage allowance of 20kg for checked baggage and 5kg for cabin carry-on. And, in respect for the main religion of Malaysia, Lucky Air has made it a point to make halal meals available for Muslim travellers.

Our colleague recently had the pleasure of joining Lucky Air for a tour around China’s most beautiful regions. With their Journey to the Lost Horizon, in and around Shangri-la tour package, a fun journey from the touch-down point of Kunming to the areas of Dali, Shangri-la and Lijiang awaited.

Kunming

The first stop was Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. While known to be a modern metropolis of China (indeed, this is where Lucky Air is based), the natural highlights of the Stone Forest and its cherry blossoms are simply wondrous to behold.

Dali

Next was a move upward to the ancient town of Dali. Though a new high speed train connects Kunming easily to the Ming Dynasty-era city, much of its traditional structures have been preserved well, including a set of pagoda dating back to the year 823.

Shangri-la

While the next region’s name has only officially been declared ‘Shangri-la’ since 2001, this Tibetan province boasts the most spectacular natural views, with rivers running through snow-tipped mountains. Among the sights that definitely are a must-see are the Napa Lake, Songzanlin Tibetian Monastery, and the Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Lijiang

Finally, the tour comes to a close in the Lijiang area, where the unique tribe of Nashi reside. The only living people to still use hieroglyphics, their quaint town is also surrounded by many ancient, breathtaking scenery. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon White Water Terrace, and Black Dragon Pond around the Jade water village and Lijiang’s main old town square will be included in the destination highlights.
