Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Videos of people dumping a bucket of ice water on themselves are going viral, with even celebrities taking part in the latest trend; the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

What is the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

In case you are still clueless as to what the whole hype is, here is a little information. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a form of awareness for ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting a person’s nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of motor neurons, which reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles, eventually leads to their death. This results in organ failure, patients becoming paralysed and, in some cases, death.

What’s the Challenge?

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is where a person has to pour a bucket of ice water on their head while being recorded. The person can then nominate other people to carry out the challenge within 24 hours. That is just one form of the challenge. The second is where the participant donates US$10 to ALS research if they do take on the challenge or US$100 if they choose not to.

Famous Participants

Among us regular folks, famous participants such as celebrities and political figures like Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, Zac Efron, Steven Spielberg and more have taken on the challenge as well, some with humorous results.
