Tourism Numbers in Malaysia Keep Growing

Tourist arrivals to Malaysia keep growing. Tourism Malaysia recently released the figures through October 2014 which revealed a 10% increase over the first 10 months of the year, compared to the same period in 2013. Total arrivals came to just under 23 million, which makes it look like the final 2014 numbers will be another record-breaking year for the country. Singaporeans, naturally, continue to make up the lion’s share, accounting for around half the tourist arrivals. They were followed by the Indonesians, Chinese, and Thais. Visitors from nearly all countries increased although the Chinese numbers, which had been growing rapidly fell from the previous year, one the very few countries to show a downturn. This has been attributed to the loss of MH370 last year causing many Chinese to avoid the airline and, in turn, the country.

It seems, however, that Langkawi is not sharing in the growing tourism numbers, with some local hotel and travel operators complaining about falling visitors to the island. They seem to think that the Langkawi Development Authority could do more to help drive up the numbers.

On the other hand, Kuala Lumpur is doing well and now ranks as the 9th most visited city in the world according to a recently released report by Euromonitor. In 2013, some 11.2 million people visited the city. The most visited city was Hong Kong with 25.6 million visitors, followed by Singapore, Bangkok, and London.
