This post is brought to you by The Energy Source.

18. The Energy Source

A brand new exercise studio for kids has just opened in Publika, Mont Kiara. It’s called The Energy Source. Here’s several reasons to take your kids to this studio, and what’s available there.

Why Bring Your Kids to The Energy Source

1. Exercise

As we all know, regular exercise is important. Research recommends 1 hour of daily activity to help kids;

  • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight
  • Build strong, healthy muscles, bones and joints
  • Improve coordination and various motor performance skills

Apart from these more obvious physical gains, there can be other developmental benefits such as;

  • Aiding in the development of important interpersonal skills
  • Promoting improved concentration and academic performance
  • Increasing self-esteem and self-image

2. Fun, Engaging, Customized Programmes

TV, iPad, Playstation, Xbox, all names that are all too familiar to many parents with young children and teenagers these days. Dragging them away from the latest electronic technology and getting them motivated to do some form of healthy physical activity can be a challenge.

The task is made all the more difficult by lack of something that will be appealing and tailor made for the child’s particular age. While soft play areas for the very young, dance lessons or competitive sports can be found in KL these do not strike a chord with every young person. Not every child thrives under pressure!

To help fill this gap, The Energy Source is offering a range of up-to-date and popular exercise programmes specifically for 2 to 16 year olds. While classes are designed to achieve definite fitness objectives they are also structured to be engaging, ever-changing and most important of all FUN. And the best thing is that any child, of any ability can join the classes. The Energy Source staff have the necessary skills to adapt moves to suit all of those in the class so that each child will build some valuable skills and leave the class feeling great.

In the section below, you can learn more about The Energy Source programmes, including Born to Move, Kids Yoga, and Sensory Integration Therapy.

3. Child Friendly Facilities

The studio has been fitted out to a very high standard with high-tech flooring, a top quality sound system and needless to say, a lot of attention to providing a safe and secure environment.

To help make the whole experience enjoyable for everyone, there is a separate reception area so that accompanying parents can relax with a cup of coffee whilst they are waiting and the children can socialise between classes.

4. Qualified and Enthusiastic People

To make this all happen needs dedicated, qualified and enthusiastic people.

Joanna Hutt, who is a director and co-owner, is a UK registered physiotherapist with specialist training in child development and paediatric physiotherapy. This background makes her ideally qualified to understand the needs and to develop suitable programme content for children and young adults.

Effective delivery is a key so it’s a policy that all instructors have a formal qualification in their area of activity and very crucially, a natural ability to relate to the kids.

What’s on Offer at The Energy Source

Here are some programmes.

1. Born to Move(TM)

The Energy Source has teamed up with the internationally renowned Les Mills organisation and is licensed to offer their BORN TO MOVE™ classes.

Les Mills International is probably known to many adult fitness enthusiasts for their highly successful group fitness classes such as BODYPUMP™, BODYCOMBAT™, BODYJAM™ & RPM™. They have now developed a special series for children between 2 and 16 years old.

Their research has identified five fundamental factors that separate the ordinary fitness experiences from the outstanding ones that motivate and inspire young people:

  1. Make it fun
  2. Make me feel like I belong
  3. Make it right for my age and stage
  4. Give me a sense of achievement
  5. Keep me physically and emotionally safe

Each BORN TO MOVE™ class has been developed to meet these fundamental needs through the selection of fun, age appropriate music and choreography.

There are five age group classes with age appropriate moves and music:

  • BTM 2-3 years old: The parent/ guardian takes part in this class. The music is written for the class with lyrics that act as sung instructions, leading children through simple moves that build body awareness and balance. The emphasis is on fun as kids develop awareness of their bodies.
  • BTM 4-5 years old: Children in this age group are gaining more effective control over movements and have vivid imaginations. This class is written to involve them in the narrative. They develop self-awareness, balance, weight transfer and concentration skills while learning how to interpret music, explore and move to a beat.
  • BTM 6-7 years old: A world of playful music, movement and games. This class introduces fundamental movement skills using fun exercise routines. Children of this age are primarily visual learners and emphasis is on easy to copy moves. The content is co-created with young people and music is drawn from their world.
  • BTM 8-12 years old: A dynamic, games and movement experience. The instructor leads the class in a series of foundation fitness moves taken from dance, martial arts, plyometrics, sports training and yoga. The music is current music that children will want to move to.
  • BTM 13-16 years old: Expressive action and energy: co-created by teenagers for teenagers, this class draws from the disciplines of martial arts, hip hop, sports conditioning, plyometrics, dance and yoga. This class is led by a trained instructor who can pick and mix from a constantly updated toolbox of tracks to keep things interesting.

2. Kids Yoga

For those who prefer a different approach, then Yoga is a fun way for children to develop important skills in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Kids Yoga is an ancient science that helps create health and well-being by building awareness, strength and flexibility in both mind and body.

The aim is to achieve a balance between spontaneity and structure, so that kids learn to listen to each other, as well as express themselves creatively.

This nurturing atmosphere encourages a child to relax and have fun while they develop not only strength, coordination, flexibility and balance, but also body awareness, better focus and concentration and self-confidence

Kids learn best when they are having fun, so Kids Yoga is much more active than yoga for adults.  Each class is structured to interweave story, song, games and poses, allowing children to learn in a multi-sensory environment.

3. Sensory Integration Therapy

The Energy Source believes in supporting children to reach their maximum potential, promoting independence and developing self-confidence. They also believe in helping children learn to control and understand their bodies and their senses.

For most people, these sensory processes develop in the course of ordinary childhood activities but for others, it does not develop as efficiently as it should. This is known as a Sensory Processing Dysfunction.

SI therapy is a type of therapy designed to help children cope with their sensory difficulties. It is based on the idea that some people struggle to receive, process, and make sense of information provided by the senses. For example, some children are hyper-sensitive (over-sensitive) to some things, such as loud noises but hypo-sensitive (under-sensitive) to other things, such as pain.

The Energy Source offers detailed, individual, assessments using standardized measures such as the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test, The Sensory Processing Measure and many other specialist assessments. These tests are useful for creating programmes specifically for the individual to provide them with a variety of sensory opportunities.
