Malaysian Visual Graphics Team Behind Hollywood Movie Seventh Son

The people who were responsible for the visual graphics in the movie Life of Pi weaved their magic once again for yet another Hollywood film, Seventh Son.

The team, Rhythm and Hues, was established in 2009 and consist mainly of Malaysian talents from local universities and colleges.

The team, according to The Star, was responsible for the background preparation, composition and VFX graphics. According to one team member, Azim Hulaimi, it took about five to six months to work on the film. Azim also worked on Life of Pi, Django Unchained and Alvin and the Chipmunks 3.

In Life of Pi, the team from Rhythm and Hues was responsible for the computer-generated imagery effects, particularly the scenes involving the ocean and Richard Parker, the tiger. Those who watched the film will agree that the CGI was indeed good, good enough for the team to take home an Oscar for Best Visual Effects!

The movie Seventh Son was recently released in cinemas, but, unknowing to most, the project initially started in March, 2012. What caused the delay? Apparently, the partnership between Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros ended in October, 2013 and Legendary then sold the distribution rights for the movie to Universal Studious, who decided to release the movie this year.

Seventh Son is based on the fantasy novel The Spook’s Apprentice. The story chronicles the adventures of Thomas Ward, a seventh son of a seventh son. The movie is directed by Sergei Bodrov and stars Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in lead roles.

According to reports, Rhythm and Hues is no longer under operations as the company had filed for bankruptcy on February 11, 2013. The studio in Malaysia was closed in August 2013. According to Wikipedia, the Malaysian unit will become an independent standalone entity with a new name.
